The Sea Sloth founding story:
The epic tale of Sir Slothy McSlotherton

The Sea Sloth Yacht Club was founded in 1869 by a sloth of the sea (shocking, but it’s true). Slothy McSlotherton was a life-long sailor. Sure, the average sloth only lives 18-20 years – but our founder was anything but average. While most moved slow, Slothy sailed fast. 

All Slothy wanted was to sail, race, make friends, and be on the water. He also wanted to find a lady-friend, but that’s a story for another time. Anyways, he was feeling lost and discouraged by all the fancy yacht clubs turning him down along with his boat made from banana leaves, twine, and thrifted 3DL sails: “We don’t take sand dollars! …Who put a sloth in the office!?... Aren’t sails supposed to be black?” They laughed at the thought, got into their private jets, and set off for Fyre Festival.  

Slothy was sad. But then it struck, “I know! I will start my own yacht club!” He let out a slow but mighty sloth smile, and whispered gently into the abyss, “It’ll be a welcoming community for anyone who wants to be on the water. Whether you’re an experienced racer looking for a regatta, a new boat owner looking for sea friends, or a cruiser looking for bays to anchor in… heck, even power-boaters!” Slothy paused, realizing he may have gone too far. 

And with that, Sea Sloth Yacht Club was born. 

To this day, Slothy’s welcoming spirit can be felt floating around English Bay. On perfect nights when the moon is full and the glasses are empty, some claim they’ve seen him foiling around in his banana leaf boat, handing out Sea Sloth burgees and tucking away forgotten fenders.
